5 Minutes with Ride2Rescue

Ride 2 Rescue consists of 4 guys cycling over 26 000Km, from London to Melbourne to expose the reality of child trafficking that exists throughout the world.

Below is an interview with one of the cyclists on the journey, John Clark:

What is the main purpose for Ride2Rescue?

The sole purpose is to increase the awareness of child trafficking and to raise funds for World Vision’s Child Rescue program.

What was it that motivated you guys to bike across the globe for the cause?

Originally it came about as a fun and adventurous way to return home from a working holiday in London. Along the way the next city or next country or sometimes the next complimentary buffet breakfast continually motivated us to keep going.

What countries have been the most difficult to ride through and why?

Iran was very tough physically. The temperature would hit 50 degrees by mid-day and we were there during their Ramadan period and found it very hard to find water or food during the day! This often left us dehydrated and very hungry. We would also sweat constantly, even when sleeping. By the end of our Iran leg we had all lost a lot of weight and were completely worn out.

What have you personally experienced during this trip?

Before taking on the ride my knowledge of child trafficking was very minimal, like most people my age. Sure, I had visited South East Asia before and had heard bits and pieces, but after visiting several NGOs and chatting with governement officials I’ve learnt so much about this dreadful issue and have become passionate about the cause. The experience of meeting a teenage boy that was rehabilitated after a childhood of forced labour was an experience I’ll never forget and one that will also motivate me in life.

You’re fighting against exploitation by biking across the globe, describe the power of that.
I feel so many people can relate to us in some way or another, we are all just regular guys, not elite athletes. We are simply taking on a challenge to increase awareness of a terrible humanitarian issue. The physical nature of our journey hits people hard, perhaps it shows we are serious!
What does Ride2Rescue hope to do in the future?
Ride2Rescue as an organisation will organise several events after this ride is completed to raise further funds to fight Child trafficking.
Individually we have all flirted with ideas of different rides but realistically we will all return to Melbourne broke and desperate to find work! We often talk about finishing off the other half of the world and make it back to London however this would require a lot of strict saving.
How can people support Ride 2 Rescue?
